Who Are You??

Have you ever said something to yourself? If you have, who was talking and who was listening?

There are two important aspects to the human soul: spirit and flesh. Those aspects can communicate with each other. But the human spirit also communicates with God through the Holy Spirit – the flesh or ‘animal mind’ cannot do that (John 4:24).

Because you are a physical being, the flesh aspect (‘animal mind’) of your soul is necessary for the physical functions of your body and your life on earth depends on it. The fact that you cannot live here without your ‘animal mind’ suggests that you can exist relying on it entirely. Your behavior will then be very much like that of any other animal. But you were made in God’s image and born with a functioning spirit giving you the capacity to rise above your animal nature; to communicate with Him via the Holy Spirit and reflect His image in your being (1 Corinthians 2:9-16, 6:9-11).

If you do not exercise your spirit, it will – just like any other part of you – atrophy and become less and less functional. Your spirit will function well if you exercise it. And – just like any other part of you – the more you exercise your spirit, the stronger it will become. This strengthening is called sanctification and is a life-long process. At some point in that process of strengthening your spirit will become the dominant, governing aspect of your soul. That your spirit should be totally controlling your soul is the ultimate achievement. The more your spirit is in control, the more you are able to be led by the Holy Spirit. That journey brings with it increasing joy, peace and understanding. So much so that your daily life is noticeably different from those around you who are governed only by their ‘animal minds’ (Romans 8:11-13).

However, it is unlikely that those governed by their ‘animal minds’ will understand why your behavior is different. You must show them and tell them why – that you are a follower of Christ and that He has saved you and sent the Holy Spirit to be with you. You must identify yourself as a Christian (Matthew 5:14) and live your life as a child of God. My advice is to wear something on your person that visually identifies you as a Christian then conduct yourself as a true ambassador of Christ. The world is very unstable and people desperately need to see real Christians around them right now (1 Peter 3:15, Galatians 5:22-23).

Which of the two aspects of your soul is governing your life?

Are you willing to step out and show others who you really are? (Matthew 5:14-16)

Each of us is a unique spiritual being. We are born individually, die individually and stand before God every moment of our lives as an individual. No matter how large a group we are in, our relationship with God is one on one. Therefore our worship and each of our styles of worship must be accordingly unique. That concept is developed and expanded in the book “Worshiping Alone” available on Amazon or Barnes and Noble If you haven’t read it, please consider doing so.
