Ages and Ages Ago

Progeria is a disorder where humans age rapidly. Specifically it is called Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS). The syndrome is a very rare genetic condition which produces rapid aging.

The syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation which causes the body to produce a protein called progerin which accelerates the aging process.

Children born with this mutation usually appear normal at birth but within the first year or two begin to show signs of aging, such as hair loss, loss of body fat, thin wrinkled skin, low voice and a pointy nose.

The average life expectancy for individuals with progeria is around 15 years or about five times less than the typical human life span. Some lifespans might be as much as ten times less than average.

Suppose there are or were humans born with a protein that was just the opposite. A protein that slowed aging by five to ten times instead of accelerating it – we could call it antigeria. There are reports of a few people that are extremely slow to age, but these are regarded with a great deal of skepticism – usually because their birth dates can’t be verified and they often look very young for the age they claim.

It is impossible to tell how fast an individual aged just from the bones alone. Any information gotten from ancient bones could only be compared to contemporary specimens regarding rate of aging. All (or nearly all) contemporary specimens would have aged at the same rate so differences could not be noticed and categorized.

With those things being said, suppose the growth rate and aging of antediluvian people – Cro-Magnons, Neanderthals and Denisovans e.g. – were under the control of some antigeria protein. As such we would be unable to determine their rate of aging. The bones of a one-hundred-year-old of that day might look like those of a fifteen-year-old of today. We have no way of knowing.

The Bible does indicate that many antediluvian people had ages from five to ten times greater (Genesis ch 5) than those after the flood. They even bore children at older ages. It says in Genesis 6:3 “Then the LORD said, My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”

We see the gradual shortening of life spans in Genesis 11 until the edict of Gen. 6:3 had been met.

No one lives beyond 120 years today. Is it that because antigerian proteins are no longer available? Perhaps such proteins were normal before the flood and those people could have aged as much as ten times more slowly than we do today. If that was the case, then someone living to be 96 years old today might have lived to be … Well, you do the math.

What do you think?

Each of us is a unique spiritual being with a physical body. We are born individually, die individually and stand before God every moment of our lives as an individual. No matter how large a group we are in, our relationship with God is one on one. Therefore our worship and each of our styles of worship must be accordingly unique. That concept is developed and expanded in the book “Worshiping Alone” which is available through Booklocker, Amazon, Barnes and Noble or your favorite bookstore. If you haven’t read it, please consider doing so.
