Neo-Babel

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. That’s the way my Bible begins. Yours probably does too. God was the God of all the people. Okay that was just Adam and Eve in the beginning and they had kids who had kids etc., but that was everybody. God was known to everyone and He was everyone’s God.

Then we see in Deuteronomy 7:6-8 (ESV) that God had chosen the Israelites (and only the Israelites) to be His people. He chose to be the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (and of course, their descendants). That’s the way it was until Christ came. Then God became the God of everyone again. That is, everyone who accepted Christ. Have you thought about this stuff? Have you ever wondered what happened? Why did God select only one group, the Israelites, to be His chosen people?

Apparently God made that choice at the Tower of Babel. Remember God was rather disappointed with His creation at that time and He sanctioned us humans with different languages. But that’s not all He did – there was more. We read in Deuteronomy 32 verses 8 and 9 (ESV*) that, at that time, God divided up the people and kept the descendants of Jacob (the Israelites) to be His special possession. So who did He divide the people with and who was watching over non-Israelites?

It seems that God had an administrative council – a court. We don’t think about that much, but it’s true. According to the Bible (Deut. 32:8-9 ESV) everyone who was not a descendant of Abraham was given to the members of that court for their oversight. Who made up that administrative council? Other heavenly beings! Or, if you will – other gods.

This isn’t some kind of heresy. There is only one true God. But there are other heavenly beings and some, like Satan, like to think of themselves as gods. Who are these heavenly beings? Usually we think angels are the heavenly beings. But remember the word ‘angel‘ means messenger – a job title. The Bible clearly mentions two groups of heavenly beings – Seraphim and Cherubim. But there may be other groups referred to as Watchers and Holy Ones (see Daniel 4:17 ESV). God created all these spiritual beings and He selected His administrative court from among them. Like humans, heavenly beings were created with free will. Consequently they, like Satan and others, sometimes go bad. In Psalm 82, we see God severely scolding that council for not doing what they were supposed to do.

Most of us call these ‘other gods’ demons and they remain a constant problem.
We see today a march toward a one-world socialist government. That march is, I think, directed and spurred on through the efforts of these ‘other gods’. It is, in effect, a reconstruction of the Tower of Babel.

We are told that eventually all the work of the ‘other gods’ will be destroyed; the ‘other gods’ themselves will be destroyed and all things in heaven and earth will be made new.
Such things as earthquakes, wars, famine and pestilence seem to be increasing in numbers and frequency just like the Bible describes. To me, it looks like we are approaching that time when all things will be made new.

I am looking forward to that new creation – Creation 2.0. Although I am not looking forward to the rather nasty process leading up to it.
How about you? What are your thoughts?

* Some Bible translations say ‘children of Israel’ or ‘sons of Israel’ in Deut 32:8 instead of ‘sons of God’. But that can’t be right because at the time of the Tower of Babel, Israel did not yet exist.

  1. Thanks be to God that He promised to save us from the wrath to come. We have to tell as many as we can, the good news, so they can be saved from it, too! Thanks for sharing that good news in these posts, Sam.

  2. Thank you Sam! Yes, I, too, believe that the signs of His 2nd coming are truly out there! I have heard a lot of people say this. Of course you have to be a believer in Him in order to know and understand what this all means. Sorry for those who do not believe and are not ready for that day of His return.

Pastor Smid has begun our Sunday morning lesson on Genesis. Be glad to get back to that study!!

Hope you two are doing okay. AND your little family as I know you are going to be grandparents again in May. We are up here. Have one case of the virus in Delaware County as of yesterday.

    He has risen!!

    1. I really loved this post. A reminder that God set us up to be His people when He created the earth… Then we blew it… Then He gave us another chance and we blew it again, and then he decided to choose certain people to be His people – the Israelites – and then they blew it, but he hung on to them because He doesn’t break his promises – and then He sent Jesus to provide another way for the rest of us (the outsiders from His chosen Israelites, if you will ) so we could be part of the chosen. Yes!!! So I find this really interesting that, of course, there are other spiritual beings who have a role and a hold on those outside of God’s chosen people. I am so glad that we get to be part of that Chosen People group! There are a lot of exciting things to ponder here. Thanks, Sam, for studying this further to give an insight I had not ever thought about before. It is exciting!
